조족등은 어두운 실내나 밤길에 발밑을 비추도록 고안된 휴대용 등기구입니다. 조선시대 순라군(巡邏軍)이 야간 순찰을 돌며 도적을 잡을 때 사용되어 '도적등'이라고도 불렸고, 형태가 둥근 박과 비슷해 '박등'이라고도 불렸습니다. 반가(班家)의 하인들이 밤에 어른을 모시고 외출할 때 사용되는 등 주로 밤길을 밝히기 위해 쓰였습니다.
철제나 목제로 뼈대를 갖추고, 그 위에 한지를 입힌 뒤 기름칠이나 옻칠을 하여 눈과 비에도 젖지 않게 하였습니다. 등의 아래쪽을 터서 불빛이 한 방향으로 모여 발밑을 비출 수 있도록 하였으며, 윗부분에는 환고리가 달린 나무 손잡이를 연결해 휴대가 용이하도록 하였습니다. 또한 일정한 간격으로 환기용 대롱을 부착하여 촛불에 산소가 원활하게 공급되도록 하였습니다. 등 내부에는 축을 중심으로 움직이는 그네 형태의 초꽂이를 두었습니다. 이를 통해 걸을 때 등이 흔들려도 초가 항상 수평을 유지하여 촛불이 쉽게 꺼지지 않도록 하였습니다. 이처럼 조족등에는 야간에 휴대하며 사용하기에 적합한 구조를 설계한 선조들의 지혜가 담겨 있습니다.

照足灯是一种专为在昏暗室内或夜间行路时照亮脚下而设计的便携式照明器具。朝鲜时期，巡逻军夜间巡逻缉捕盗贼时曾使用此灯，因此又称“盗贼灯”；因其外形与圆葫芦相似，也被称为“葫芦灯”。此外，它还常由官员府邸的仆役在夜间陪同主人外出时使用，主要用于照亮夜路。
照足灯以铁制或木制骨架为主体，外覆韩纸，并施以桐油或生漆涂层，使其在雨雪天气中也不易受潮。灯体下方开口，使光线集中向下照射，照亮脚下；上方连接带有环扣的木质提柄，便于携带。灯体还均匀设置了通风管，以保证蜡烛能够持续获得充足氧气。灯内设有以中轴为支点、可自由摆动的秋千式烛台，即使行走时灯体摇晃，蜡烛也始终保持水平，不易熄灭。照足灯的结构设计充分体现了古人在夜间携带与使用照明器具方面的智慧。

The patrol lantern is a portable lantern designed to illuminate the ground at one's feet while walking indoors in the dark or outdoors at night. During the Joseon Dynasty, it was used by night patrol guards to catch thieves, earning it the nickname "thief-catching lantern." Because its rounded shape resembles a gourd, it was also known as a "gourd lantern." It was commonly carried by servants of noble households when accompanying their masters outdoors at night, serving primarily to illuminate the way at night.
The lantern was constructed with an iron or wooden frame covered with traditional Korean hanji paper, which was then coated with oil or lacquer to protect it from rain and snow. An opening at the bottom directed the light downward, illuminating the ground at the user's feet. A wooden handle fitted with a suspension ring was attached to the top for easy carrying. Ventilation tubes were installed at regular intervals to provide a steady supply of oxygen for the candle. Inside, a swing-like candle holder mounted on a central pivot kept the candle level even as the lantern moved. This prevented the flame from going out while walking. These ingenious design features reflect the practical wisdom of Joseon artisans in creating a lantern well suited for nighttime travel.
